Subtitleeditor

In Debian GNU/Linux 13 Trixie you can find the subtitleeditor packages which contains the graphical program of the same name.

For the workflow I'm interested in (adding descriptive subtitles to travel footage), I need a few simple features:

  • Insert a title at the current position in the video
  • Move the title forward or backward in the timeline
  • Extend or shorten the duration

The program allows you to assign shortcut keys to various functions. These are the configurations I have implemented:

I /ClipboardPlugin/clipboard-paste-at-player-position
1 /VideoPlayerManagement/video-player/skip-backwards-frame
2 /VideoPlayerManagement/video-player/skip-forward-frame
Q /VideoPlayerManagement/video-player/play-pause
A /VideoPlayerManagement/video-player/skip-backwards-very-short
S /VideoPlayerManagement/video-player/play-current-subtitle
Z /AdjustTimePlugin/remove-from-start-and-from-duration
X /AdjustTimePlugin/add-to-start-and-to-duration
C /AdjustTimePlugin/remove-from-duration
V /AdjustTimePlugin/add-to-duration
  1. Open the .srt subtitle file: menu File ⇒ New or File ⇒ Open
  2. Open the video file: Video ⇒ Open
  3. Add the waveform (real or dummy): Waveform ⇒ Generate Waveform from Video or Waveform ⇒ Generate Dummy Waveform.
