Subtitleeditor
In Debian GNU/Linux 13 Trixie you can find the subtitleeditor packages which contains the graphical program of the same name.
For the workflow I'm interested in (adding descriptive subtitles to travel footage), I need a few simple features:
- Insert a title at the current position in the video.
- Move the title forward or backward in the timeline.
- Extend or shorten the duration.
The program allows you to assign shortcut keys to various functions. These are the configurations I have implemented:
| I | /ClipboardPlugin/clipboard-paste-at-player-position |
|---|---|
| 1 | /VideoPlayerManagement/video-player/skip-backwards-frame |
| 2 | /VideoPlayerManagement/video-player/skip-forward-frame |
| Q | /VideoPlayerManagement/video-player/play-pause |
| A | /VideoPlayerManagement/video-player/skip-backwards-very-short |
| S | /VideoPlayerManagement/video-player/play-current-subtitle |
| Z | /AdjustTimePlugin/remove-from-start-and-from-duration |
| X | /AdjustTimePlugin/add-to-start-and-to-duration |
| C | /AdjustTimePlugin/remove-from-duration |
| V | /AdjustTimePlugin/add-to-duration |
The workflow is something like this:
- Open the .srt subtitle file: menu File ⇒ New or File ⇒ Open
- Open the video file: Video ⇒ Open
- Add the waveform (real or dummy): Waveform ⇒ Generate Waveform from Video or Waveform ⇒ Generate Dummy Waveform.
- Press Q to play the video, press it again to stop at the desidered point.
- Press I to insert the clipboard content as a subtitle at current play position
- Press V and C to adjust the subtitle duration.
- Press Z and X to adjust the subtitle position.
- Click a specific subtitle into the tiles list.
- Press S to play the selected subtitle.
- Press A sto skip backward the play position.
NOTICE: When you press the I key, the subtitle will be inserted after the current subtitle in the titles list, beware that also the play position is after the current subtitle, otherwise timing and position will be messed.
